"Way Down" is a song recorded by Elvis Presley. Recorded in October 1976, it was the last single released before his death on August 16, 1977. The song was written by Layng Martine, Jr. and was later covered by Status Quo and Cliffhanger. Released as a single (with "Pledging My Love" on the B-side) on June 6, 1977, it was his current single when he died. It was racing up the top 40 when news of his death broke. Shortly after his death, it became the 33rd Number 1 of his career. It reached #1 on both the American Country and British Pop charts just days after his death, and almost six years after his previous Number 1 single. It was reissued in April 2005 and reached #2 on the UK singles chart.

  • This song is on the Moody Blue album. The best song on the whole album, in my opinion.

  • J.D. Sumner singing the words "way on down," officially the lowest note ever recorded by the human voice!

  • What a sad day August 16th, 1977 was. "Way Down" was climbing the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart when Elvis Presley died. I was in the back yard talking with my older brother when our next door neighbor's son came out of his house saying, "Guys, Elvis Presley just died!". I was eleven years old. It was a nice sunny afternoon in my neck of the woods @ 5 pm CDT. R.I.P., Elvis Aron Presley (Elvis' middle name was misspelled on his birth certificate)....January 8th, 1935 - August 16th, 1977.

  • A great #1 Hit by the king in 1977.

  • e still could put down right until the end

  • The King rocked till the end ! ... IMO one of the best songs he sang ! ...

  • It hit #46 in the Uk charts on 13 August 1977, then #42 week ending 20 August (after his death), before racing to #4 on 27 August and then number 1 on 3 September.

  • @strawberryrhubarbs Now I'm not claiming to be J D Sumner here, but I've recorded a song where I hit a bottom B, one semitone lower than this one. (it's on my channel - Boiling Strings For Jesus, Big Balls Version). Perhaps I should get in touch with Guinness! :oD
