According to the Free Masons of St. John's Lodge #1, who own the Washington Bible,
"Little did the brethren of 1770 realize, as they looked upon their new Bible, that their land would ere long sever its ties with the mother country, and that nineteen years later, upon that Book, a man would swear to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution" of the new nation. For it was upon that Bible that George Washington took the oath of office at his inauguration as first President of the United States on April 30, 1789."
This bible was also used in some of the most regrettable events in our history as well, like Lincoln's funeral and Jimmy Carter's inauguration.
An article in my local paper alerted that this piece of history would be on display about 20 minutes from home and I couldn't resist.
