  • Beautiful, beautiful, and so peaceful. My mother died early Friday, Sept. 23rd, and I just got back from NY. It was not entirely unexpected, but it was sudden, and I'm still trying to settle down.

Resphigi is one of the composers I've been listening to tonight.

  • @8888Rik I am sorry for your loss, it is a special piece for me too: we continue...

  • It is very rich in orchestral colors. Any guess on the orchestra?

  • @buchadolph Richard Hickox (RIP), and Sinfonia 21

  • I cannot understand why this particular piece is so under-represented in not only YouTube videos, but in music catalogues in general. It is, in my opinion, Respighi's best piece and one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

  • @99Wayne01 - Any loss of loved one, expected or not, is heart wrenching. My thoughts are with you... I lost my beloved bride of 33 years in September of last year. Thank you for sharing this gently woven food for the soul.

  • @theopopo

You guys know these pieces are orchestrations of mostly lute music from the Renaissance/early baroque? It's just that some of the comments here make it seem like it's Respighi's own composition. This one is a piece by Messernet (or Gaultier, I've seen both) coupled with an aria by Boësset. As far as I can tell Respighi follows the original harmonies etc. very closely. Just a heads up. :-)

  • @99Wayne01 I really appreciate your expression of sympathy. Thank you.

  • Peaceful, quietly rich, lovely. First time hearing it... It's true what a previous commenter said, this has not been given much attention, certainly not by classical music stations. I'm glad I found it ... while looking for another movement to this work.

  • @drewsinky while sweet-sounding and beautiful, it is one of his least original compositions, following conventional chord progressions in a textbook fashion. i like it a lot, don't get me wrong, but it is nothing compared to pines or fountains in musical ingenuity.

  • I have been listning to this beautiful music since i was 10, thanks to my father.

this is one of the best, Thank God for giving Respighi such a beautiful gift.

  • It is one of Respighi's best, I agree - certainly the four movement suite is the best of three he wrote.

I am also very fond of the last of the Botticelli Triptych - the Birth of Venus - indescribably beautiful and effective (I do not say the same of the rest of that suite).
