Study Technician (I+D+i) Industrial Development of new synthetic material (LDPE) for the production of Booms and products absorbent of persistent hydrocarbons (HCp). ABSORBENT BOOM FILLER WITH FIBER PP = DEFICIENCY and the SOLUTION = ABSORBENT BOOM FILLER WITH MODULES LDPE.

1º Description of the Problem The present study gives an objective opinion next to a technical analysis on the inefficiency and the deficiencies of the current absorbent products of viscous petroleums (HFO) elaborated with polypropylene fiber and cellulose that are used in the fight against those poured of persistent hydrocarbons (HCp). The reasons of such trials are based in more than 20 years of experience working as Beach Master in Chile, directing operations of control of spills, cleaning and restoration of marine ecosystems contaminating with HCp: crude, bunker, heavy fuel oil and Lube oil. In the case of the absorbent boom, the main factors that influence in the inefficiency to contain oleaginous fluids, like in the null absorption of HCp: they are their interior sleeve, the high density and the strong compression of the polypropylene fibers and of cellulose used as material of absorbent filler of these disposable booms. Consequent with the above-mentioned, it is necessary to specify that the high density and the strong compression of these fibers produce a contrary effect in this type of booms, in the sense that, the fibrous material when being in contact with an aquatic surface generates high filtration of water, what harms its flotation level notably losing its freeboard, adverse effect that translates himself in an ineffective product for the absorption like for the contention of HCp poured in columns of water. In the data sheets of absorbent booms fiber filled PP says absorptive capacity boom 8"x 10 ', 65 gal / bale, 4 pcs / bale 40 lbs. But does not specify what type of oil. The heavy and viscous oil not penetrate into the fiber, are only useful in its outer perimeter, the rest is only water.
