APARTHEID IN INDIA - http://www.lynmovement.org

Rampur Diara, (Bihar):These pictures tell the story of how poverty diminishes the difference between man and animal.

Just 25 kilometers from Bihar's capital Patna, in the Dalit village of Rampur Diara, human beings have replaced oxen to plough the fields.

Umeshwar Paswan and others like him work for Rs 50 a day.

"Our oxen have fallen ill and we are too poor to afford a new pair," Umeshwar Paswan, a labourer says.

More than 50 families in Rampur Diara earn their livelihood in a similar way due to abject poverty.

They have lost hope for their future.

" During Indira Gandhi's time, we were given one acre of land each and we cultivated that. Everything was spoiled when Lalu took over," Paswan says.

58 years after Independence, this is the harsh reality for some farmers in certain pockets of Bihar.

For a state that has just emerged from the 15-year rule of a party that claimed to have championed the cause of social justice, this reality is a slap on the face of tall political promises.

It's not just labourers, even the ones who hire them to replace the oxen go through similar suffering.

"We do not use animals for ploughing because they come expensive. Human labour is cheap and coes at Rs 25 a day," Kaushal Kishore Singh, a farmer says.

For Umeshwar many others like him, it's a battle for survival.

The world beyond this village may have changed, but for these farmers, things have remained the same.

And unless the world comes to their rescue, they will continue to suffer in silence.

  • nice little plant they got at 2:13 lets all smoke some, get together and feel alright and expose the racism inside Hinduism which continues to divide people placing those with the least calcified pineal glands at the bottom while the ones with mental issues who think they are superior fail to accept reality.

  • God bless them

  • I wonder what the green/sustainable/organic movement could do to improve these peoples lives? Of course, the main problem is that these farmers probably don't own the land they till.

  • humans are animals man. we are the worst living animals in earth's history. we dont want to do it, so we make other animals do it for us. who has the right to decide which animal should work? humans of course, because unfortunately are brains have evolved allowing us to create tools and desire and want. unfortunately we have been sucked into it.

  • Some of the comments posted here, only need a swastika to be complete. Little decoration, you know.

Some seem to forget (Hi MickeyLove01) that some countries interfere with the development of other countries, in order to make profit, giving a damn about the people living in them.

That´s called imperialism. Rings a bell?

  • When will this world of people of colour and status will ever unite and be one understanding, respecting, caring, supporting each other and not be jealous or greedy of another.

The white person will earn more and relax without any problem but for the coloured still and will always live in hardness of life.
