The second part of my little series on the life of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart); this one is focused on the lesser known part of the story, those 'mysterious' years between 1746 - when the Prince was rescued and taken over to France after his 6-month flight in the Highlands following the loss of the battle of Culloden and of the whole uprising - and 1765, before his father died and he got back to Rome to carry on with his exile over there. In between all of this, we find him endlessly struggling to keep his promise to his 'faithful highlanders', trying to get back to Scotland by all possible means; but no government wants to help him out with another campaign, and after having signed peace with England, the French king finds he must even resort to the petty measure of imprisoning the Prince, in order to have him leave France. The Prince soon afterwards disappears, and in his place a long string of incognito identities occupy the roaming and wandering years to follow; long years of hardship, wich will only be dimly lit by the love affair with old acquaintance Clementina Walkinshaw - and the birth of daughter Charlotte. In the meantime, Charles sees all his hopes and sanguine expectations for a comeback to Scotland hopelessly crushed, though memories of the pain and helplessness of Scotland will never fade from his mind. It seems there is nothing left for him to do but give up, and his life is more and more becoming nothing but a slow succession of pain and delusions. But there is still much more to come, in his story... and there is still hope; if not for Scotland, at least for him.
Music is by the wonderful Capercaillie, from their album of gaelic songs "Glenfinnan - Songs of the '45".
