After 300 years of Scottish union with England, is Scotland about to become an independent country? The SNP, widely predicted to win next month's election, is pushing for full independence.

"I find it extraordinary that pompous twats like PM Blair can tell Scotland we can't govern our own affairs", states Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond. Fuelled by disillusionment with Tony Blair's leadership, support for the SNP is growing. If they win next month's election, they've vowed to hold a referendum on independence. Britain warns separation would lead to Scotland's economic collapse. But the SNP believes revenue from North Sea oil can form the basis of a Scottish national economy. And, as Prof Devine explains: "All the basic foundations of Union have disintegrated".

  • And don't listen to rubbish from the media regarding passports to get into England or crap about defending us or our military , who do we need defending from ???

    Don't be anti English , this isn't about them , it's about us !

I hope we make it but first we need convinced we CAN

  • Most Scots in my view want Independence the English should be less worried about Scotland wanting freedom from the Union & be more concerned with the UK breaking free from the EU the biggest worry for the current UK , we(UK) are handing Billions to the EU WHY ? if we dont concentrate on this evil it will suck us in & Homogonise us. There is already an EU police force that has the power to go into any country in the EU this includes UK and their power overides UK Law. Thats worrying to me.

  • why worry about the gap when everyone is doing a shitload better one day the poorest people will have Iphones and flat screens and they will still scream about income inequality

  • I'm American and I think it would be fantastic to see Scotland entirely free. Then we can see what happens next.

  • @angelignacioalvarez Scotland is already free just not independent. and all they plan on doing is becoming independent from the UK to be dependent on the EU.

  • Freedom for Scotland!

  • @BennyJonesPhoto Ever heard of devolution? It's pretty much what you said. Scotland had it's own Parliament, making most of the decisions for Scotland.

  • I also see the english point of view. But i still think the scots have earned their right

to be self suffi... (dont know the word).. Leave them to fend for them selves..

Dont claim land in vast areas you dont visit.. The scots love their bare fells..

    Give it to them now!!

Same with Northern Ireland. What the fuck is the quarrel about?

Give the land back to the people.

Let the people that likes England move, and give the land back to the people the died for it...

  • I understand all the arguments. Im swedish, and if somebody enslaved my country

i will fight to the bitter end for my country.

Let the scots free. They have fought for a long time, and deserve their freedom.

Anybody that say something else can bite my axe.. Vikings been in scotland before the picts.. I stand by them any day..

  • Being English & a supporter of the Labour Party,I can understand some of the feelings in Scotland.Under Tory governments,Scotland has had the raw deal (just like much of the rest of the UK !) Yet Scotland has not voted Tory in any significant numbers for decades. Therefore the SNP seems to be a way of avoiding Tory government in Scotland. But becoming Independent is NOT the best answer. SNP, Labour, Plaid Cymru & any other parties who opposed this Tory government should unit to defeat the Tories.

  • My view: it might just be the case that the SNP are the good guys (keeping student grants, good health care...etc) just until they get more power... and then? Who knows. At the end of the day they're all politicians...

The UK will be stronger than England or Scotland alone. In the end if we breakup, a France and Germany run EU will swallow us both up.

A vote for independence is a vote for dependence on the EU. There is no option for independence in the 21st century... remember that.
