The powers that be have made the carrying of the Irish flag a Public order offense under section 21.The flag in question was bought on O`Connell street that morning for 1.99 in Carroll's Gifts and Souvenirs shop who were also selling union jacks and American flags .The union jacks and other flags or similar size were being waved about on O`Connell street so I was shocked by this ban Gárda action . The flag was about say 10 by 8 inches with thin pole .The pole had fallen out so i placed flag in my pocket , I was not part of any protest .I wished to film the days events .Thomas Francis Meagher first introduced the flag during the revolutionary year of 1848 as an emblem of the Young Ireland movement, and it was often seen displayed at meetings alongside the French tricolour.
The green represents the older Gaelic and Anglo-Norman element in the population, while the orange represents the Protestant planter stock, supporters of William of Orange. The meaning of the white was well expressed by Meagher when he introduced the flag. 'The white in the centre', he said, 'signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green' and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in heroic brotherhood.'

  • I was not part of a protest but was meant to film the families of the victims of Dublin Monahan bombings lay a wreath but was prevented by Gárda from getting there

  • They took a bottle of fizzy drink off me

  • @keithzworld :)

  • ok so obiously you had the camera in her face as you passed... she didnt like it as ya can see on here face she was uncomfortable and didnt feel like she was in power. she saw the flag and taught il take that from her and make myself feel like im in power. it back fired on her and she withdrawed when you got the crowd on your side.

  • @jamydoyle I had the camera rolling for a long time I will post that video soon. She actually leaned towards the camera as she was trying to pull the flag out of my left hand pocket. The stick was separate stuck in my waistband she didn`t go for that .She didn`t ask for that .

  • the gaurd obviously tougth the pole and flag were one piece and at 108 you seperated them not before from what i can see then their was no issue. so whats the big deal .theirs are reasons for not letting people carry anything that could potentiealy be used as a weapon like a flag pole.common be fair .

  • @TheManandsea be fair ? You make the assumption I some how separated the items but how could I with a camera in one hand ? Truth is they were quite separate.

  • Oh come on now. She got it wrong. Let her be.

  • I am not Irish nor have I been to Ireland. I do not fully understand the tension between the Royal Family and Irish people. But I will say this , the age of Kings and Queens has come and gone and there really should not be any Monarchy anymore. The fact the people allow the Queens family to exist shows that people like to be weak and ruled. Democracy does not work with a meddlesome Monarchy or Vatican running it in the shadows. Now if you will excuse me I got some pennies to cut up...

  • under section 24 of i was bullied in school and dumped by my boyfriend act...........

  • god why cant you respect the law instead of fighting against it. seems you like to be causing trouble or finding faults with the law instead of living civil with each other.

  • Make no mistake! Members of An Garda Síochána are no friends to the Irish people! They are every bit as ignorant and as uninformed of the true nature of the reality which surrounds them as policeman here in the US are!

  • Re: madamk

I would have given her the stick without the flag and picked another one up further on only to go back and wave it around her :L

  • JULY 2ND....SEE YOUS ON THE STREETS OF DUBLIN!!!REVOLUTION!!!

  • Unbelievable you cant have an Irish flag because it might offend the queen
