It's a good compromise, for sure. as far as the cleanliness of the veneer while painting, flocking, "watering"; would simple masking tape work? You've likely already tried and I'm sure it's easier said than done. I don't know if the masking tape thing would work with the water work to keep it clean, I don't entirely know your technique. I DO know that the veneer would need dremel/dry fitting to fit the recess of the river, and something to keep it clean while pouring..
