This is PERFECT. Oh, sweet Lord. Right around mid-season 3 or so I think he starts fighting to fit Helen in his life when Barbara's already becoming everything, and that's when things go sour... I never doubted he at least wants to love her, but the kind of connection he has with Barbara is once in a lifetime, and you captured that perfectly.
(He doesn't get over her, obviously - really, "Limbo" was all about him starting to move on - eventually, he'll see the truth.)
