in those days USC players actually had to :
1. go to class at least once /mnth
2. be able to count to 6
3. had only 8 yrs of eligibility, instead of 12

Crisler was a visionary to have used the single wing. Surely even he could not have predicted the impact it would have on today's game.

What gets me is that many Pac-10 fans love to boast about their conference having a better record than the Big-10 in the Rose Bowl, yet they seem to not take into account that the Pac-10 refused to play for a good ten-year stretch back in the day because they were being annihilated by the Big-10. Had the tradition not been interrupted I think it's fair to say that the Big-10 would have more wins than them.
Anyway, it is a wonderful game that I look forward to every year.
Thanks Much for postin

I met a man the other day who played for Michigan in this game. He showed me his ring, I was blown away.

@stoopkid80 Film has always been at a different frame rate than video. This footage might not have at a standard 24fps or it might not have been converted to video at the proper rate.
According to one of Michigan's media guides, this game was televised by a local station but that footage was likely never saved.

@89plainsman The SW offense was already over 40 years old when this game was played. Pop Warner invented it to exploit the speed and quickness of his Native American players at Carlisle. No doubt that Crisler took it to the next level with his tweaks. Of course, the Wing T grew out of Crisler's version of the SW. He was a great coach and visionary.

Why does it seem like old football clips are in slow motion?

Great old footage of college football

I wonder if the rules would even allow you to run something like this now a days. Kinda reminds me of Florida's offense with Tebow.

my grandfather was a member of this team, what a great game!

@Johnhoulgate Michigan won, 49-0. This is 1/1/48. They wrre naitonal champions that eyar and the enxt. Harmon graduated after the 1940 seaosn.
I remember seeing the pages of this game in my Dad's El Rodeo Yearbook. Painful loss to the Trojans as they had a very good season in the fall. I believe Tommy Harmon was the star of this game.

Harmon had graduated several years before this game was played.

interestingly enough 5:53-6:01 the guy throwing the ball on the reverse is Bump Elliot (Bo's predecessor), the reciever on the play is Gene Derricote, one of the first black players to star at Michigan. Also if my understanding is correct, this had to have been the last time they would use shotgun regularly throughout a game prior to Lloyd Carr.

Yes, that is Bump Elliot on that play. The shotgun formation... I have no idea how much they ran it in the 50's and 60's.

WH - Well done again man. Great footage, where did you find that? The crowd noise overlay gets a little annoying after a while but I guess that's how they did it back then.

This footage is included as bonus material on the UM Football Memories DVD that was released in 2004. I'm guessing the crowd noise was added to silent footage of the game.
