As a person of color who came of age in the United States late 1980s - early 90s, I cant say how many of those conversations I witnessed firsthand in school classrooms, cafeterias & buses. I was hardly ever a participant because it wasnt my world. But you couldnt communicate with some of these guys without knowing something about sports. As an 8th grader in 1984-85, I first noticed the ritual of guys wanting just the sports section of the antiquated (pre-internet) black & white newspaper

But I also think its possible to paint with too broad a brush. I mean, were not free from thinking in terms of stereotypes either. I think the level of athletes intelligence and quality of interviews is a cyclical thing. I think coming out of the civil rights era, it was common to hear athletes who sounded uneducated, I think the result of affirmative action efforts to get black faces in programs—the mad push for true integration.
