from the Working Families Mayoral Forum of July 2, http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/liveforum,
h/t to Leonie Haimson for transcription: Thompson: (2hr. 31): I do support charter schools, but they serve only about 25,000 students. That leaves more than 1 million who aren't. In dealing with failing schools few things: breaking up larger schools and create smaller schools within them. When we look at what we did, a model called Chancellors schools; we capped the size of the school, created a
rigorous curriculum, focused on teacher training, literacy, etc.. intensive
teacher training and schools improved. And we involved parents. We need to
bring them in. (doesnt mention that they radically reduced class size in
K-5)
We need to look at old models like Chancellors district; not everything is
standardized tests. We must bring back art and music to schools.
Masters asked question about his record as head of the Bd of Ed.
Thompson: We got rid of decentralization, we put someone in charge the
Chancellor, but I wasnt in charge, we didnt have more than $18 billion to
draw on. We focused on literacy and early grades. We said no to vouchers.
I think the work we did then was exemplary, that helped to lead to Mayoral
control today.
