Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption is a term that describes the state of our body after exercise as it tries to restore our body back to homeostasis. When we exercise our body needs extra oxygen, energy, and a change in our hormones to keep up the demands from our heart, lungs, and muscles. We also see an increase in core body temperature and respiratory rate. After the workout, our body has to use energy to make energy from the food we eat. Restoring our oxygen levels, hormones, energy stores, core body temp, and our respiratory rate after intense workouts has been shown to take up to 36 hours. That's lots of extra calories utilized that add up over time!
