Last sunny days of Antheus @ Antwerp Zoo, Belgium, in January 2010, before leaving for a new home and lady.
Antheus*, greatest bird on earth, is an Eurasian Black Vulture, a species that goes by the scientific name "Aegypius monachus" and is also known as Cinereous Vulture. He is a gorgeous wild born male in his early 30s, about 1 m tall and 8 kg light and lived at Antwerp Zoo, Belgium, since winter 2007.
Eurasian Black Vultures are a large, long-lived and monogamous raptor species of conservation concern. With less than 10.000 pairs worldwide and even less than 2.000 in Europe this beautiful species is considered 'near threatened' at global and 'vulnerable' at European level (BirdLife International 1996, 2008). As a consequence, there are huge international endeavors aiming at breeding the Eurasian Black Vultures in captivity and reintroducing their offspring into former natural habitats.
* In Greek mythology (The Metamorphoses of Antonius Liberalis) "Antheus" is the father of "Aegypius", which is the scientific genus name of the Eurasian Black Vulture.
