When 8 month-old Saminou was brought into Save the Children's clinic for malnourished children he weighed just 4 KGs. Three weeks later he looks like a very different little boy.

Niger is facing a severe food crisis. More than half of Niger's population (7.8 million people) are in need of urgent emergency assistance.

Thousands of children are at risk of death and will need treatment. 340,000 children under five are at risk of suffering from severe malnutrition in 2010 and 900,000 from moderate malnutrition. If they don't receive treatment, thousands of children will die this summer. Families urgently need cash or food relief and support in order protect their livelihoods.

Save the Children's Response:

Save the Children will aim to target at least 60,000 children through nutrition programme, another 100,000 children for health programme and 55,000 children (under 18) through the food security programme.
