Why is there so much argument, in real life this and real life that, one must first tech the specific technique and at a speed where one can learn. Once it becomes instinctual, then speed can be aplied, where in real life it becomes applicable. It is only one specific technique for one specific attack, of course there is umteen million variables in any given situation and always a "what if."

everyone's getting way too obsessed with this one demonstration. its just that a demonstration. at no point did anyone say "this is how every knife attack will happen" its just one example, jeeez!

@nimbo343 I like to apply Sun Tzu's principle that the purpose of war is to break your opponent's will to make war, not to beat his army. Same principle; you don't have to be able to beat him; you just have to make him not want to continue the fight. If you can't beat him, you can at least make his victory too costly for him to want to pursue it.

first get stab proof vest second get a knife, then learn how to stop an aggressor with a knife. Knife is defensive weapon attacking with a knife is stupid.

I would parry the attackers arm with the knife while stepping my body out of the way and delivering a hammer to the side of my opponents neck aiming for the brachial artery a completely non lethal and effective stun causing momentary black out giving u time to run or finish the fight a technique taught to the good old service men of the greatest country in the world the U S of A it's a great technique and so is the one above great vid

The technique I would employ would be to pary the slash while stepping my body out of the way and deliver a hamer fist to th side of my opponents neck targeting the brachial artery a totally non lethal but very effective stun technique causing a momentary black out giving you time to run or grab the knife while he or she is unconscious it's a great technique and so is the one above great vid

Also, the more techniques you train, the more concepts you will have to use in real life, so while it might not turn out text book, you may end up in the position at 11 seconds, maybe you didn't set it up, but in the chaos you just ended up there while getting control of the weapon, then you can use the technique, or apply the concept of it.

@milner03 Alright, imagine this. A guy in a bar is not too fond of you, so he takes you outside to bash your head in. Two factors would be important here if you're going to run. 1: is he faster than you, or is he more enduring? If he is, you're not going to last long. 2: Are you surrounded? That is not unlikely in street fights. So no, not always. You may not win the fight, but you're not giving up without a fight - we should be allowed a little bit of pride.

@milner03 People always say that but in times where I've been in situations like this, there just wasn't anywhere to run. Staying and fighting doesn't necessarily mean you think you're good. It's your only option sometimes and there's no reason not to have some help.
