Dr David Starkey concludes his epic story of our monarchy with a special programme on the history of the House of Windsor.
Far from being stuck in the past, the story of the monarchy in the 20th Century has been one of re-invention. In the space of a few decades our Royal family changed its name, its image and the role it played in the life of the nation.
It embraced new technology and found new ways to engage with the people. As David Starkey reveals, this was a course of action that would take the monarchy to some of its greatest moments of triumph, but also sowed the seeds of its near destruction. But the British Monarchy still soldiers on!

  • As an American I debate among myself from time to time which is worse; A corrupt Monarch or a Corrupt Democratic Republic controlled by big business. I'm inclined to agree with a statement by Mel Gibson in "The Patriot (2000)": "Why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants 1 mile away?"

  • @yorenie101 A British Monarchy can hardly be politically corrupt since she does not have pass any legislation and represents no one but the state.

  • Charles, an excellent father? Where was he when William was in the hospital with a concussion? Not at the hospital with this son, where he should have been, he was out playing polo while Diana was at the hospital with her son. Diana was a wonderful Mother while Charles was an absent father & husband. I hope that when the time comes, William will taker over from his Grandmother, not Charles. He will not make a good, decent King. Long live William.

  • @bluekittySC, Now that's unfair. I am not Charles' supporter or anything but you can't say that he was not a good father. He is not perfect, like any other parent but he was and is an able father. He took care of his sons very well after Diana died. He was thinking of marrying Camilla in 1999 but then he decided that he will marry after his children are grown up. He also told media to leave his sons alone after Diana died and media agreed. Charles knows how it feels when a child is alone......

  • ...because he was a lonely child himself. I mean, he was confused at the age of 4 that who was his mother as the Queen was gone for long tours of the Commonwealth and Queen Mum took care of him. He was starved for affection and love. He once said that "I won't treat my children the way my father treated me. Damn protocol... I know how it feels when you have no mother and a strict, brutal father."

  • As an American, I have to say I'd like to see the Monarchy regain some real veto power over the Government, so that Royal Assent became a real function again. I'd be very uncomfortable with the UK's "elective dictatorship" with nothing at all to stand in the way of anything a Government wants to do. An independent executive is a good thing, and a Monarchy can be that. It could be an hereditary tribunate and constitutional guardianship instead of just an ornament of State.

  • i forgot anytime anything goes wrong just blame thatcher! sarcasm of course

  • @Rentonboyo Charles should not be open minded to other pagan faithsl. Christianity stands alone and he must not do that to his Christian faith.

  • @mak34237 I agree.

  • Say what you will about Charles, he at the very least founded a charitable empire and has helped thousands, even when he didn't have to.

  • @bluekittySC Who are you to criticize this mans parenting, I'm sure he wasn't out playing polo just some media bull! How would you feel If I questioned your parenting I'm sure from time to time you have screwed up as I have, nobody is perfect His Royal Highness does the best job he can and millions of people respect him for at least always endeavoring to be better and to serve his subjects as heir apparent with zeal and determination. more than i can say about politicians!

  • @yorenie101 Charles isn't corrupt and neither were most of the members of his family, of course you get one or 2 bad eggs King John as an example but almost all British Monarchs had there peoples best interest at heart and we owe our very existence to them. Imagine if George III had cut off funding to his crown colonies or lost the 7 years war to the french, America might look very different from what it is now. my point is monarchs contributions to the present should be respected.=)

  • Wrecked by the Diana affair? I think you'll find it was Charles and Camilla who brought that mess upon themselves and the Monarchy.

  • Glad to hear him speak up for Charles and his charity work. It's well deserved.

  • Long live our most traditional Queen!
