Some time in the 1970s, the Frisbee found a new purpose, according to Tim Parichan, founder of the Web site FresnoDiscGolf.com. A new sport was invented. And on Saturday, Jan. 13, Fresno hosted a disc golf tournament that drew about 110 players from around California.

Three years ago, the Woodward Legacy Disc Golf Course opened to local disc golfers, who have multiplied since. Tim Guild, Fresno's tournament director for the nine-city Central Valley Series of disc golf, estimates there are 500 players who regularly play the course, which takes about an hour and a half to complete 18 holes.

The swift pace is just one advantage to this sport's forefather -- otherwise known as "ball golf." Disc golf costs only the price of discs ($8-10 a pop; most players have two or three) and park admission ($3 in season). Plus, as these players will attest, the skill level and enjoyment factor are on par with the other kind of golf.
