Kamina died early as a homage to Nadesico and the early death of the equally awesome Jiro Yamada aka Gai Daigoji. kamina's death was used in exactly the same way to affect and shape the main character as Daigoji's death was used to shape and affect Akito Tenkawa. Kamina is just Daigoji taken to his logical interwebz infused conclusion.
