This was the main promo for KTXL's Newstar 40 satellite truck, which made it easier to do live reports. "Beyond The Nut Tree" refers to the Nut Tree in Vacaville, a sort of restaurant and mini-amusement park that was a landmark for many years and torn down a few years ago.

Don't know how they got Leslie Nielsen to do these promos, there were a couple others with him as well.

  • Heh! My dad has worked in engineering at 40 since '75. He told me this was shot on a weekend. Nice to see the old master control booth & those 1" c-band tape machines again!

  • My condolences- if I'd worked there a long time I'd be hella depressed seeing how much it's declined from the great station it once was. I sometimes drive past their building and even that makes me cry.

  • I am going to miss Leslie Nielsen. A wonderful actor and a great man. He made me laugh even with this simple promo.

    RIP.

  • With Leslie Nielsen doing the promos, well, surely, he can't be serious. Nielsen is serious, but don't call him Shirley.

  • I remember this video. I'm from Sacramento....born n raised.

  • @80stvthemes "Yes... BEYOND the Nut Tree." LOL!

  • Whoever posted this is my hero!! This was the the greatest commerical for local news in the history of TV and totally spoofed more "serious" newscasts like channel 3 KCRA...AWESOME.

  • Yes Channel 40 was the first TV station in Northern California with a Satellite Truck... they didn't just lease it they owned it. Bought it from Hubbard communications and were a CONUS member for years. This was back in the days when local families owned the TV stations. Jack Matranga wanted to one up the Kelly brothers who had been the first to buy every piece of new technology in town for decades.

  • Funny that channel 3 is way better now. lol

  • Anything local attracting ANY star is amazing. lol

  • Channel 3 and channel 13/31 are the best now.

They have the best studios and highest quality HD.

Channel 13's set looks like it's the most up-to-date.

  • before channel 31?

  • I drove past channel 40's building just the other week and couldn't believe how decrepit it looks from the outside. You'd think they could invest in a new facility or something.
