The Queensland State Government is moving to protect what it says is the "best of the best" land from permanent damage caused by coal mining and fossil fuel development. It says the new laws will balance the importance of resource investment with the need to shore up the state's food security.
But these new laws provide unacceptable exemptions for coal seam gas mining, which threatens the security of the fresh groundwater supplies used for farming, town water and to maintain the natural environment.
This small step provides some hope to farmers, but falls well short of what is essential for a reasonable state planning regime.
