Now that I've seen this I'm gonna get it. Loved HPLHS's Call of Cthulhu, so I can trust they tackled this well also. BTW Please please please do At the Mountains of Madness or maybe Shadow Over Insmouth?

So I've heard. It is a shame indeed given that out of Lovecraft's entire body of work, that would probably be the one that most lends itself to a visual medium.

Guillermo Del Torro was supposed to be making a faithful at the Mountain of Madness adaptation, unfortunately the studio that was supposed to be backing it refused to pony up the necessary money to make it and the project got scrapped.

There's actually a few that I've wondered about. At the Mountains of Madness is actually quite a visual story and could be quite good in the right hands. I've also wondered about The Shadow Out of Time, The Temple, The Shadow Over Innsmouth (a straight version that goes as close as possible to the original story with as little change as possible- no giant monsters or forced love interests). It's not part of the mythos but In the Walls of Eryx might be interesting material for a film as well.

I suppose you're right. After all it is basically mythology, not neccessarily a solid canon like you have with Tolkien- so while I personally prefer the idea that the people of Innsmouth worshipped Cthulhu, just because Lovecraft didn't neccessarily intend it isn't neccessarily mean Dagon isn't part of the mythos. Of course I suppose you could also take a middle ground and say the creature in Dagon was a race of beings that inspired the myth, as opposed to being the deity itself.

I think its pointless to debatte because LC himself probably didnt have an opinion about that. Like most pulpwriters of that era, he wrote stories so he could buy canned beans and pay his rent. The mythos was created by his followers. Yes, the creature in Dagon was probably some Deep one or a weird fishcreature of some sort. The questions you are asking is pretty much the point with cosmic horror. Its not meant to be answered, cuz the answer is beyond our comprehension

Actually, Dagon isn't described in either. In "Dagon", there is a creature that is described, but it is never referred to as Dagon. In fact in the original text it's actually described to be worshipping the obelisk the narrator finds (odd thing for a subject of worship to be doing). Nowhere in The Shadow Over Innsmouth does it describe Dagon, and in fact if I remember correctly there was even a bit of chanting that sounded R'lyehen.

Thats nitpicking. LC is about being vague and mystical. Thats the whole point with cosmic horror. Nerds love having myths printed in stone, but in this case they are wrong. I dont think Dagon is Cthulhu and that debatte is unecessary( read above). Dagon is descriped in the "Dagon" story and Cthulhu is described in Call of Cthulhu", and they are very different. I dont think LC can explain that more then David Lynch can explain his latest movies, cuz its not meant to be explained.

Actually, there is a bit of a debate among critics regarding whether Dagon is actually a creature in the mythos. In fact, it actually has been argued that the "Dagon" mentioned in The Shadow Over Innsmouth is actually Cthulhu, who Obed Marsh was referring to by a more familiar name (originating from mythology). Still, in the book this wasn't explicit and mainly speculation.
