The Kelty Gunnison 2 series out-performs its price level and as proven in this actual high altitude test, it can be pressed into mountaineering service when needed. Its 92"x58" floor area and 40" height provides its users with 37 sq ft (+10 sq ft vestibule) of living area (specs subject to change of course). I prefer rectangular floor plans for their roominess and simplicity and Gunnisons have it. This gives excellent livability for one dude or dudette plus dog; two adults will find it a tight fit. Factory weight is listed around 5 lbs 9 oz but my upgraded Kely Gunnison 2 weighs in at actual pack weight of 6 lbs 11 oz. These upgrades include a cut and fitted footprint (from plastic blue tarp) and 8 MSR GroundHog tent stakes (superior to the stock aluminum ones). Expect fast pitching due to color-coded tent fly and clip pole attachments. Some sagginess in the sidewalls may be noted in the design, a characteristic of two-pole designs. The polyester rain fly is excellent, providing double vestibules on each of the zippered, mesh entry doors. The crisscrossing DAC aluminum two pole design is common and some noodly-ness should be expected but most will find it adequately strong. But when properly guyed out, extra rigidity is achieved and the tent Gunnison will ride out moderate winds well (angled rain fly sheds wind well too). Velcro pole attachments for fly-to-poles are provided. Poles are DAC 7000 series aluminum. Mesh integration is excellent (as shown) and achieves good air exchange. Under-fly breathability (crucial) is also aided by two hooded vents and the clip pole attachments which allow for free air flow. In this rain/sleet/snow filled night, the Gunnison kept Allie and I dry despite the wetness we brought in with us. I am impressed with its durability and quality at this price level (off season prices often drop below $130, check Campmor sales in Fall/Winter). This translates into a durable, cost-effective design that serve as your primary back country shelter or a wise emergency kit shelter (blowing away other cheaper alternatives like a plastic tube tent). Couple that with outstanding product support and customer service you can expect from Kelty and you can't go wrong with the Kelty Gunnisons. ///////////////////////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9.5 out of 10

  • Hey Nutn & Vari...

I boutht a Gunnison 3 and have a few questions for ya. Does your tent have those "Jake's Feet" on the corners? I'm concerned about one of them breaking in the bush and not being able to recover. Granted I can get extras, but was wondering your thoughts on the technology.

My tarp vent just about rubs on the tent even if I push it outwards.

The doors also don't roll up all the way. Just seems nothing is built the way it used to.

    Keep up the great videos!!!

  • @galtidea I'll ask Nutn, galt. -- Veri

  • Hey Veri,

Does Nutn sleep in a hat too? Can you please tell him from me that life is much more rewarding when you embrace your baldness, and too short to wear a hat everywhere. I'm not trying to criticize him. If you saw me you'd know. I'm 35 and goin' bald big time. In fact, I work outdoors and have recently purchased a boonie hat that really helps shield the sun.

Maybe he has personal reasons why he's gotta wear a hat EVERYWHERE, but life is too short to wear a tactical comb over in a tent.

  • @Mrpracticaltactical Both his jobs require hats. You'll rarely see him without one..even camping like that, he'll wear one to keep warm. -- Veri

  • Nutn, say your Dog Ally busted one of her legs and was unable to walk on one of her back legs - how would you cope with that this far in the wilderness, freezing cold. How would you get back to your car with her?

I'm asking because my dog just busted her knee doing minimum effort excercise and need operation on it now..

  • @GrandChamp1989 Nutn would carry her out. Even if he had to leave the pack and come back and get it, but knowing him, he would probably try to bring both out at once.. -- Veri

  • Thanks for the video review. I was undecided on a tent but after seeing your review on the Gunnison 2.1, I have made up my mind. This is the best real world review i have seen on youtube. I will be buying this tent ASAP. I am use to camping In my home state of Utah but now live in Scotland. I hope it will hold up to the Scottish Highlands unpredictable weather...high winds, rain, and snow. After seeing this review I think it will. Thanks again.

  • Great review.. not sure how I missed it.

Thanks for all your hard work.

  • For some reason although I'm not a tent person, I prefer building shelters, and rather fast movement due to less travel weight, you make a that tent look very appealing to me, same as you do with everything else that you review. I like that in a way.

  • Yick, almost makes you want to wear a mask with hose running outside the tent. Especially good for when the dog taints the air, haha. (dog did it)

  • Your tent reviews are very detailed and AWESOME!!! Nobody does it like you.Thank you for all your hard work it is very helpful.

  • Nutnfancy in flipflops! There goes tacticalness out the window!

Just joking with ya, you might want to try Water Shoes. I use them when camping instead of flip flops as an easy on/off, lounging around the tent shoe. They can be got wet.. as the name suggests ;) and they are pretty light and compact. Usually rubber soles, neoprene uppers, very comfy.

Thanks for all your camping vids Nutn, I'm going through them all trying to figure out what aspects to keep in mind when choosing my own tent.

  • How do you keep your tents waterproof, through the years? Good video on the Gunnison series.

  • have you seen the Kelty zenith? found it at target for $60...seems like the gunnison minus one door...

  • Kind of stuck between this and the REI half dome 2, hmmm

  • I actually enjoy all his long reviews .If is spending over 100 bucks on any item i want to know everything about it. so keep the long reviews coming nutn!
