Mono audio tracks are perfectly fine for podcasts, but leave much to be desired for other media. iMovie 2009 does not provide a method for converting mono audio tracks (likely recorded with a computer microphone) to stereo.
This video covers how to solve this problem, using features built in to iMovie as well as the free, open-sourced audio editor 'Audacity' (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).
