Also, in California, getting conservatorship over anyone is very difficult, and the California courts take it very, very seriously. My dad's conservatorship requires that my brother report every dime spent on my dad, and he is only allowed to spend it for my dad's care. My dad had given up all control of his finances to his abuser. She is now awaiting trial for 2 counts of felony elder abuse. Don't abuse your parents. Help them. They gave you life. This is the least you can do for them.

My father was the victim of financial elder abuse by a "caregiver". His situation was called a "Sweetheart Scam". As soon as my mother passed, she stepped in to fill a void, and took him for everything he had. We gained conservatorship to get control of his finances out of her hands. We were successful. We stand to gain nothing, since there is nothing but his pension left. We use 100% of that for his 24 hr care. We love our dad. He needed us. We were there for him, not for us.

to the comments abt elders abusing younger - find a site that addresses that particular problem bc elder abuse in general is far greater & more rampant than elders abusing younger - with that said, I lived in bad situation where elder landlord was abusive toward me, but personal experience & research leaves me to believe elder abuse is rampant & doesnt get the attn it needs & I don't think enough help is avail 4 this & SocWrkrs suck, didn't help me 4 an eldr loved one being abused.

old people should be treated as our equals
not as our slaves
but not as our superiors or Gods either

what about ANY ONE ABUSE! DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO ANY ONE YOU LOVE!
also you should have added the logical FACT in this video that old people can be abusive as well.
that way you are not sounding agiest and are in favour of only one age group of people just because of there age.
there for i am personally flagging this video for age discrimination!!!!!!

Anyone in New York can look up the law of guardianship for the elderly in the "Mental Hygiene Law Article 81". Within that law there is a section on the "powers of a guardian" which every person should read. After reading it, you will realize that everything you imagined about your civil rights or due process was a figment of someone's imagination. Remember, forewarned is forearmed. Join the fight to stop forced guardianships and conservatorships before it happens to you!!!!

My father in law had Alzheimer's when his wife died in 2003, and a lawyer rewrote Dad's will, giving everything to a realtor. A month later, a judge declared dad incompetent and a guardian was appointed.
The guardian continued to allow the realtor and attorney access to Dad, who had convinced Dad that his daughters were out hurt him.
When Dad died in Nov., 2005, we were forced into a will contest that continues to this day.
