Essentially more money gets you a lighter bike. And in the world of cycling weight difference makes a huge difference to the performance of it.

If two riders of equal ability race, one on a cheap $100 bike and one on a $10000 bike, obviously the one on the expensive bike will win. The cost of a bike is generally relative, but not restricted to how well it will perform. But it dosen't take a 2 year old to figure out that rider ability is important.

most people are better off buying new shoes rather than wheels, the extra stiffness can work a charm and it costs much less
