Transsphenoidal surgery has very low risks. There are three serious risks, the first being a change to the patient's vision because the vision nerves are right next to the pituitary gland. In Swedish's experience the chance of this is 1 in 500. The second major risk is damage to the carotid arteries that carry blood to the brain. The risk of damage is about 1 in 1,000. The third risk is the damage to the pituitary gland, which has the chance of about 2%-3%.
