I recently took a trip with a friend up North to Haifa and Acco (Acre).
Our weekend is Fri-Sat instead of Sat-Sun and most shops close on Friday at 1pm in the winter or about 3pm in the summer, so Friday morning is the busiest time of the week for shopping.
Haifa is a bustling city with an ethnically and religiously diverse diverse population. The shopping streets in Haifa were lovely. Lots of people, lots of characters, buskers on nearly every street corner. The city is built on the side of a hill, overlooking a large bay.
Things to see in Haifa: the Bahai Gardens, the Maritime Museum, several old churches, monasteries and convents (this is where the Carmelite order was founded, for instance). Israel's only subway is in Haifa, and there's a gondola style cable car that goes to the top of the mountain, too! Haifa is also home to the University of Haifa and the Technion.
