Return to the Moon: What it was like and will be like!
-Dr. Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt

A view of Apollo 17 in the context of what is left to learn and accomplish on the Moon with an eye to science, settlement, and providing energy for the Earth.

At the Space Center Lecture Series on March 13,2008 Dr. Schmitt shared his experience with the Apollo 17 mission, lunar resource utilization, and his thoughts on the future of lunar science and exploration. The Apollo 17 mission was the last of the great campaigns to the moon and included the longest lunar surface interval of any mission in history. Don't miss Jack's exciting tales of past lunar exploration and future plans to Return to the Moon.

The Space Center Lecture Series was co-founded and is co-hosted by Dr. Benjamin Longmier and Mr. Gary Kitmacher.

  • 19 of July today happy hoax anniversary everybody.

  • 56:38 - hummmmm has someone been talking to Obama ?

  • Thank you for uploading this. Excellent video! Dr. Schmitt is an intriguing man.

  • Yes, you expression and language is much better and clearly shows my stupidity.

  • WTF...??? Anyone?? Anyone???...Language???...okay....I'm done unless anyone want to comment...common guys...Do You really think we are that stupid??? Guess so

  • No, I am saying that if they would not even do so after seeing the earth from the moon, they will not do so regardless. It does not mean after having seen the earth from the moon will automatically save everyone. There is definitely historical evidence that the moon race was a good diversion for the cold war, instead of both side trying even harder to blow each other up.

  • I think your arguments are somekind widespread. Without seeing the earth from the moon people would not have protected environment or children in poor countries? The empirical evidence could only be shown if we would have a paralle universe of the earth where was no moonlanding. You cannot really argue this. It is just a question of believing. You also could say nothing would have changed when we would have a moral instance like the pope and the catholic church.

  • And to add to that, if people still manage to make horrible choices for their leaders and are still apathetic about conserving the earth AFTER seeing with their own eyes how fragile it is, then all that you said about saving children and the environment would have never happened anyway. All that money that would have been spent on the moon program would have gone to "saving" banks, weapons, ineffective health care and at best the token food aid the 3rd world countries.

  • Apollo 8 was a part of the entire program. Without the goal to land on the moon, Apollo 8 would have never happened as it would be unnecessary. The US and most western industrialized nations are democracies. The people's outlook is reflected in the candidates they choose. If they still make horrible choices, that's their own fault.

  • That was Apollo 8 and not 17. Apollo 8 had no moonlanding. By the way, do Polticians and Managers have the same perceception? I suppose not! If the earth would be a bank politicians would rescue our planet immediatley!
