As a side note, this was taken with a "still" camera, so the video quality is poor... I MUST get a real video camera!
This is my first time seeing a bear in the wild in person, and it was very exciting! This took place at Lewey Lake Campgrounds, in the Adirondacks. It was after we finished eating dinner, and I was just about to start washing the dishes when I saw him digging up a bee's nest for honey. After he realized we were there, I'm sure he noticed the cooler and other items usually associated with food, so he decided he'd like a closer look. We did not agree with his intentions, and I proceeded to yell and "stand my ground" as they say you're supposed to do.
Meanwhile my husband opened the doors to the Jeep in case we needed an escape, and began looking for his bear spray. Idiots that we are, we didn't think we'd EVER see a bear THERE, so our bear spray was tucked safely away in the very bottoms of our backpacks! Lesson learned! Although this guy was not a huge bear, he was to be respected just the same, and I was a bit nervous each time he took a step closer. He could do some damage if he wanted to.
There was a couple walking by as this was happening, so we invited them in to take a look with us. We suspect that the fact that there were four of us instead of two may have been why he finally decided to give it up and take off. He was probably about 30 feet away when he was closest to us, and I didn't want him any closer. We're guessing he was 1-3 years old, about 150-200 pounds. Awesome experience!
