Well, we could watch all the pretty girls throw themselves at the guy, and he not take them up on it. Then, while everybody is asking, "what is he, gay?" some other minor character shows up, who is interested in the pretty girls. He get more story as we go along. This guy ends up with the pretty girls, and the guy we asked "what is he, gay?" turns out to really be gay. He gets the hunk. But we still have lots of pretty girls and fan service.

Maybe they should make a harem anime where the reluctant guy, the one everybody asks "what is he, gay?" actually IS gay. That would throw people for a loop. Then some other guy, a minor character at first, winds up with all the beaver, and Our Hero winds up with the hunk.
