  • You may want to look up some of their sources before buying into this. CEI for instance, is in the business of climate change denial, which is generally an indicator of corporate bias and general kookiness. Also, they keep using the "free market" as the yardstick of recycling's effectiveness, and that may be the biggest gris-gris of them all.

  • @mbaucco

In this culture you are correct

plus this video is in no way proof of anything

    it is an entertaining video

  • The only things to recycle are glass bottles and aluminum cans.

  • A mistake on pop can recycling, that is probably made in other forms of recycling too:

How much is a user's time worth, as s/he sorts garbage to the proper recycling stream. Even 1 sec. per pop can is completely uneconomic.

    A popcan is 1/10th of a cent. Recycling 1 can /sec at 3600 secs/hr * 0.1 cents = 360 cents/hr = $3.60/hr. That's half or less of most minimum wage rates (get a real job)!

$3.60/man-hr is an amount that should also be added into the total cost of recycling the cans.

  • Penn can be a bit of an asshole. The reason for recycling plastic isn't just economic. It's to keep the shit out of landfills, storm drains, and the oceans. Millions of sea birds and marine mammals are dying because they're eating plastic thinking it's food. The Pacific Gyre is basically thousands of square miles of plastic detritus that will be spinning around for the next thousand years. And there's now more plastic in the ocean gyres than plankton. So fuck you Penn, and Teller. It's needed.

  • Aluminum is worth recycling. To make one aluminum can takes the same amount of energy needed to power a full size television for 4 hours. Glass, plastic, paper...yeah, very little return and a lot of it just goes unused.

  • recycling cost you 15 mins a week or 13 hours a year. better for everyone incl. government if ppl work in their professions. bins in your kitchen or garden lower the quality of your living. than you use more natural resources to achieve the same quality of living. separated garbage requires more vehicles to get collected which use more fossil fuels, driving half empty. i am for recycling but must be done in recycling plants, not on the street.

  • @mbaucco So you don't like the free market, and most of us don't like being forced to pay for bullshit. Solution is simple, let us live in peace and go pay for the recycling your self.

  • @RnBramwell My market prices are from "metalprices", a dotcom page

  • @JPMorganSuckBalls

    Pop can is 15 gms.

    0.015 Kg = 0.0353 pounds

One pound scrap Al = $0.9857 on Int'l markets [scrap Cu is $3.78/lb!]

    $0.9857 * 0.0353 lb = $0.035 per can

You're right, my market price was outdated.

Multiplying above at above hrly rate produces $12.52/hr for mindless recycling.

Since no one recycles popcans as rapidly as my eg., that dollar rate is actually much lower.

My fundamental point remains, that recycling popcans is counter-productive, especially in Western nations.

  • @RnBramwell 3 cents without melting.

    what country you live?

  • @JPMorganSuckBalls Yours is not the value of the metal at smelting.

  • @RnBramwell popcan is 1/10 of a cent?

you got to be shitting, it worth 3 cents in our town sir.

  • Heard of PLASCO? They are a Free Market company that turn garbage into useful products, mainly gases, but are way more efficient. One bin. One collection. Loads of useful byproducts from almost annihilation.
