Director Michael Hoffman made some fundamental mistakes with some scenes. As this scene proceeds, Plummer and Helen Mirren move together after HM has changed the 78rpm to music. All MH had to do was have them embrace and dance a few short moves and move the camera 360d and this would have had an important impact to this scene and to the love both Tolstoy and his wife shared. The ending could have been improved by having Helen Mirren in deep consult with the rabbi. The rabbi had no voice. No?

I like this character!! In the book she was presented as quite unstable, but here she seems quite reasonable, surrounded by all of those wacky men!!! LOL!!!

i'm amazed how james can create a whole new body language for his each character... in penelope he has this habbit of shrudding his shoulder like it's some kind of tic... in atonement his expressions are so controlled, almost rigid, even during love scene... even his eye gaze is different in each movie... strong in atonement, naughty in becoming jane, sweet in penelope, and doubtful in this film... salute to him!
