Dug another Dakota fire pit, this time I used a layer of stones in the pit to improve airflow under the fire and two air channels. Got the tip from a guy in britishblades forum. Thanks! It was a raging hot fire. Very useful if you want a bed of coals for cooking fast. Oh, I used a small hand trowel for digging. Is a lot faster than a dig stick.
@c9ari I would agree 100%. Especially if you are allergic to smoke

@ncbookz You could make a tubular chimney to flow the smoke out! Or even better, dig the pit deeper, make the smoke exit pass under the soil, under where you sleep. The warm air rises up so if the tube going under you is higher than the pit, i assume this should work... There's some reflexion to do :)

no smoke? could this be used inside a teepee or a wood shelter? just trying to think of the best way to keep a spider hut warm with no smoke

Very nice indeed. I think this is the best way to do a fire.

im assuming that the smoke gets pulled down the secondary hole? the primary is obviously feeding the pit naturally, what about fuel usage is it more or less efficient? i can see it concentrates the heat but does it burn through wood faster?
