  • Thus rather than going about it in the Indian/Paki way of loudly throwing down the gauntlet and having a generally negative profile (for both groups), I think BDi's should go about their business more quietly, achieving tangible success on many different fronts. There are more than enough of us to achieve this communally. The real thing to have is a community-wide support structure in place to achieve these targets. People need goals/motivation - for BDi's there is plenty to be had in dis regard

  • Even in things as diverse as MMA/sports, there should be more of an emphasis WITHIN the community (i.e. quietly emphasising) for doing well/being the best. This would give the youth a much needed sense of direction. There is a tendency for them to feel alienated and in the insular BDi culture this can be extremely crippling to achievement. It doesn't help that the "elders" are often uneducated and thus completely clueless about how it should be done. But the support system needs to be there.

  • But I don't think this commitment to excellence should be centred around only a few professions/things. This leads to stagnation. For example, if the community focused on getting into the para-legal professions, it wouldn't be a bright future, since much of that will be automated (and therefore these folks would find themselves out-of-work). This means that there has to be a support system within the community for these young men (that's who we are essentially talking about) to excel.

  • Cultural insulation is a characteristic of Bangladeshi community, and I don't see that changing. So I think it's pointless to try and halt/reduce that, since there are way too many beneficial aspects (from the BDi community point-of-view). Therefore what needs to change is the commitment towards excellence that is somewhat lacking in the BDi community. In other words, the standards need to be raised; but this is best achieved within community i.e. without appeal to "outsiders".
