He's done it. Brian Lara has reclaimed his world record, ten years to the week since he overhauled Sir Garry Sobers's 365 on this very ground, and just six months after his mark was usurped by Australia's Matthew Hayden. What is more, Lara's phenomenal unbeaten 400 - only the tenth quadruple-century in all first-class cricket - has given West Indies the chance of an astonishing and crushing victory.

Lara reached lunch on 390 not out, passing through a guard of honour in front of the pavilion as his team-mates lined up to congratulate him. Unsurprisingly, he was not finished there, and shortly after the break, he swept at Batty once again, this time for a single, to become the first man to break the 400 barrier in Tests.

  • 3 people obviously got hit for 6 by Lara

  • The world will have to wait at least another 50-100 years before another genius like Brian Lara is born and graces cricket.

The peaks he has scaled in cricket are Himalayan - and he did it with the effortless grace of a Rolls Royce!

Highest score of 501* in first class cricket, and 400* in test cricket - END OF STORY, my friends!

(Proud Indian cricket fan here, who loves Tendulkar, by the way - but facts are facts, you cannot argue with the truth.)

  • .....If he batted for even a half hour more he would have beaten both Don Bradman's and Mark Taylor's record. If he kept batting indefinitely he could have threatened the massive scores of Matt Hayden and Lara. Instead he made the honourable decision and declared in order to leave enough time to bowl India out, which the Aussies did. Clarke's a real captain; Lara was nothing but a selfish glory hound.

  • Remind me again, what happened in this test match? Oh that's right, it petered out into a draw because Lara refused to declare before he got his record. Instead of leaving enough time to try to bowl England out, Lara decided that his own personal achievement was more important than his team's chances of victory. It was as selfish an innings as I've ever seen in test cricket. Look at Michael Clarke a few days ago. The bloke scores 329 and then declares with over 2 days left in the test.....

  • i think i would get bored after 200 runs

  • I bet this shut the Barmy Army up!

  • Michael clarkes better...

  • Lara and Sachin are different players with similar abilities. Comparing these two players means nothing but, those who don't know much about Cricket are posting their views. Enjoy Cricket. We have seen some entertaining Cricket from these two players. At times our bowlers were at the receiving end when Lara was at his best.
