  • I posted a blog about turkeys for meat on my website blog thepromiselandfarm

  • Very informative. I'm renting a featherman in a couple weeks and this is better that their video. I was wondering how old your birds are when you butcher?

  • @MrGoatlady Thanks. We've processed birds at different ages. We processed our meat birds at around 16 weeks. Our chickens we have for egg laying take about 6 months to reach a decent weight for eating.

We really like heritage turkeys for meat. They're wonderful foragers that even though we wait until 8-9 months to butcher.

  • I am afraid to be the one that has to tell you this but...Those aren't kidneys. Let's just say that we know it used to be a rooster.

  • @user2112

You're right another viewer brought that to my attention. Well, eating them all mixed up w/ the other organ meat... hasn't killed us yet. I think we'll probably keep including them even though now we know the kidneys are really cajones :) lol.

Now we know. Thanks for the comment.

  • Wow...thanks for such a well done video! We process one chicken every season but finally are digging into raising a batch of meat birds and need a more efficient set up. We're greatful we found your post!

  • Did you ever try shucking a chicken? Growing up I can remember my father reminiscing about growing up on a farm in New Jersey. He told me about shucking where you basically poke a chickens brains out. The advantage is which he swore up and down by, is that it paralyzes the chicken such that the feathers just fall off if you fall the chicken by hitting it against something. I've read about it but I'm curious how well it works vs just bleeding the chicken which you have to do anyways.

  • thank you- great video- very clear and complete.

  • Interestng about the turkeys, I am butchering some bronze and hope they'l work in the featherman. What kind of heritage turkeys do you have? I work in a feed store and some of my customers say they dont like them but I'd like to give them a try instead of buying new birds every year. My red cornish will be 12 weeks at butcher time hope they are gonna be big enough.

  • Excellent video - very informative. I've never prepped chickens before but we're raising some now and I'm super nervous. This has helped give me a better idea of what I'm supposed to do when the time comes. Question though: What's that super nifty thing that took off the feathers and how much would one run me?

  • RIP chickens..!! i m going to KFC
