From the 2000 New Orleans premiere production of William Finn's musical semi-autobiography. Directed by Derek Franklin, sets by Bill Walker, costumes by Debby Simeon, choreography by Karen Hebert, sound design by Cliff Stromayer. Produced by Sonny Borey for Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre.
Video by Bill Blanke.
In this clip near the finale of the first act ('March of the Falsettos'), Marvin's (Jimmy Murphy) life is falling apart. The impending marriage of his ex-wife Trina (Chris Lusk) to his former psychiatrist Dr. Mendel (Kristopher Kael), his son Jason's (Brian Bell) disappointment with both his parents, and his male lover Whizzer's (Vatican Lokey) decision to leave him brings Marvin to a crossroads.
In this scene, Marvin's (Jimmy Murphy) family is on the verge of collapse as his ex-wife Trina (Chris Lusk) prepares to marry Marvin's analyst Dr. Mendel (Kristopher Kael). Meanwhile, his lover Whizzer (Vatican Lokey) is also leaving Marvin behind as their only son Jason (Brian Bell) watches his father falling off his pedestal.

  • ...my hands were tied, my father cried, you'll marry, I married. That's lyric writing at its absolute best. What a dynamic show. A masterpiece.
