That was smart you didn't put oil in the filter first.....So when you first start the engine you will hear it clunk clunk clunk for a few seconds until oil gets to the bearings....again I say that was smart

@steve89z - After draining an engine of oil, the resulting engine start is a dry start, as the engines oiling system is empty/dry and when the engine is started, there is a resulting dry start and a moment of metal-to-metal contact allowing more accelerated engine wear to occur than at any time in an engines life. Priming the oil filter with oil helps to reduce this unnecessary engine wear. This factor is why changing oil too often can reduce engine life.

you would think they would make the oil filter more accessible on some vehicles. i know on my silverado its pretty easy to get to but if im right that is a ford they are a pain in the ass and get old oil everywhere.

@k3v1av no need to worry about that knock, thin film of synthetic oil will remain on engine components for days after it was last run.

Oil is used to help the rubber gasket expand and make the seal tight... There is no point in using a wrench to tighten the filter, as most engines now are made of aluminum, and that can easily destroy the block.... That and he used old oil, which if there was particles in, could cause issues later on because they could POTENTIALLY keep the gasket from completely sealing.

you put fresh oil on the gasket,not dirty oil! you don't need to put oil in the filter.i have a 91 300e benz and the oil filter is mounted on top engine vertically.the oil pump will pump oil immediately.hand tight on the filter also,don't use wrench.

crank it without starting....just to turn the engine over a few times will pump oil to the parts

In some engines ,the filter is mounted to the engine block at an angle other than vertical with the mouth up.Like in some blocks the filter is horizontally placed. And a couple os seconds is not going to harm the engine which most probably was warmed before draining the old oil.
