At Pilanesberg Game Reserve we stopped while an elephant herd crossed the road. We were busy watching the cute little baby when all of a sudden an angry young bull came running out of the bushes beside us, roaring and flashing his ears. Ally noticed that he was in musth, which is a periodic condition in bull elephants characterized by aggressive behaviour, extremely high testosterone levels, and a constant dribble from glands behind the eyes, and a dislike of silver rental cars. We stayed still, not really knowing what to do, then, when he decided to charge us again, we decided that staying still in our as yet undamaged car was probably not the best idea. Luckily there was nobody behind us! It was quite scary, and at the same time quite funny, in an adrenalin-pumping, car-seat-soiling kind of way.
