Very sad song. Somehow I remember this song being about another singer/songwriter from this time--Steve Goodman who passed away from Leukemia in 1984.

i, too, have been searching for this song ~~ i didn't know the song title, but i knew some lyrics. anyhoo ~ tonight while searching for another song i thought i'd google some of the lyrics (the lyrics i remembered, the song title i did not!) and waaaa-lah! up pops the name cashman and west and i knew at that moment, i'd hit pay dirt. : ) i LOVE how i can hear the scratchiness of the record player needle -- that phoot phoot fhoot sound that preceeds the song. thanks bundles onehit !

I have been searching for this song ever since 9/11 happened because that's exactly how I felt about NYC at the time. Full of despair. NYC being the friend that was dying. Thankfully our old friend has shown us all that she has plenty of life and prosperity and good times left in her. Thank you so much for posting!

This is great!...I looked for this song since 1972...it got a lot of local airplay when it was out, then disappeared, never to be heard again.....It shows that the Internet is good for something!

"When she was GOOD it was oh so GOOD." Another stalwarth behemouth death song - huge hit- 1972- never to be heard on (commercial) radio again. Why is it that some songs like Goddamn BJ THOMAS Raindrops keep fallin on my head- an annoying obnoxious song- NEVER goes away- but so many gems pass like ghosts- written out of POP history....
