This video shows how to remove bearing shields and seals, and how to put them on.
Before cleaning bearings remove the seals or shields for best results.
Here are a couple of easy ways to remove and replace bearing seals and shields.
Each bearing accommodates 2 covers/closures that are either removable rubber seals, removable metal shields held in by a C-ring., and non-removable pressed in metal shields.
Tools For Removing Rubber Seals:
-- Paper clip
Tools For Removing metal shields
-- Push pin, needle, or razor blade
How to remove and replace a bearing seal:
1. Poke the end of a paper clip about 1-2mm inside the bearing between the inner ring and edge of the seal.
2. Push the paper clip down to pry the seal off.
3. To put the bearing seal back on lay the seal on the bearing and press it gently into place.
How to remove a metal shield:
1. A c-ring is a narrow skinny washer with an opening. it is in the shape of a 'C'. The opening was cut at an angle. Each end is cut at opposing angles. Place the tip of your push pin, needle, or razor blade corner against the open end pointing out and try to pry it out.
2. When the c-ring is out, tap the bearing on a hard surface to get the shield out.
3. To put the shield back on lay the shield back on and slide the c-ring back into place. It can be a bit tricky. Try getting both ends first or one end at a time.
Hey I have the pressed in shields and it's a really old board so the bearings are slow and dirty. I wanted to give cleaning a try with stuff at home before I give in and just buy new bearings. I was just wondering if i can still go the whole mile like in your cleaning video with the shields on while cleaning and still get some results? I don't need the best board in the world coz it's only a small hobby but I'd like the bearings to go a bit faster so I don't have to push as much.

@nicoletot Since the board is old and the bearings are a little corroded just add lubricant to the bearings. Don't worry about cleaning them because drying bearings with shields on is not always perfect.

@skateboardtech thank you! I live in Pittsburgh and almost everyone does that here for some reason. I never did it because everyone's bearings fall apart within a month of them buying them.

@yamaha212121 It's probably a world wide epidemic. The person who started this bullshit craze should be choked to death with a handful of metal shields. Doesn't the words "shield" and "seal" mean something? They don't slow down a bearing at all, and people think they do. Why would a manufacturer put them there if they didn't serve an important purpose? The world rotates on its axis because it's greased with bullshit.

Is it true that if you take the clear plastic spacer that is inside the bearing, that it will make your bearings faster? I don't meant the seal or shield, but what's inside that separates the balls.

@yamaha212121 Who the hell told you that load of crap? Do them a favor and slap them really hard in the ear. If you remove that ball retainer the bearings won't work. Seriously, slap that person who told you. Do it for me. Do it for all man kind. Do it for them. Maybe they'll never listen and repeat such BS. If you think it makes bearings faster than slap yourself in the ear. Im kidding. No, it is absolutely 1000000% NOT TRUE.
