@beatleboy903he wasn't that the queenmother that smiled and waved when lennon made the "rattle your jewelry" comment?

I saw this live in 1963 and thought they seemed very nervous. It was such a stuffy occasion and I think they were surprised how well they won over the flunkies. After this, the Royal Variety Performance became less formal and poncy.

looks like John was very nervious before saying that line... he was brave to say that in that time

Well, it proves one thing and that is how so much younger we all were in 1963 (I was 16 and a half when this went out on television and I'm 64 and a half now). We thought The Beatles were totally fabulous and when they broke onto the pop scene like a huge tornado, there'd never been anything like them before...ever. They all had talent with a capital "T" and we'll never see their like again. There's nothing remotely like them today, that's for sure!

@cluciano63 Now when older people are there, I tie them into their seats, and force-feed them Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" at 300 watts. That rings their bells for sure.

If I were a singer, I'd rather my fans singing along me too loud than polite people in silence. =/

@zidane1s Yeah, good cop, bad cop, I get it!

Well people - by watching this video you are looking at one of my first memories - it was a big deal in my house ...and I remember - despite being 5 years of age - everyone was around the TV waiting for the show to finish and the Beatles to come on. I banged my little tin drum all the way thru!! Yes it was a bit theatrical, that's the way it was then - it was of its time. BTW is the Prince of Wales Theatre the same as the Palladium? I still dont get the "Sophie Tucker" joke - can anyone explain?
"for those of you in the cheaper seats clap you hands, and the rest of you rattle you'r jewlery." Now would you say that to the queen of england!!

The Royal Variety people are much politer than the regular fans, waiting till the Beatles are done to applaud and all that.
