In light of the recent unrest in Xinjiang, a northwest territory of China in dispute by the indigenous Uyghur people, I'm showing some video from an interview with Rebiya Kadeer. A native of Xinjiang -- called East Turkestan by Uyghurs before its occupation in 1949 and still today -- Kadeer rose to prominence as one of the wealthiest people in China. In 1997, she openly criticized a violent crackdown of Uyghur protestors that left many dead, and was eventually imprisoned in 1999 for organizing against the Chinese Government. She was released to the US in 2005, and has continued to lead her people's fight for human rights, freedom and democracy while in exile as the president of the World Uyghur Congress. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, she is considered a separatist and a terrorist by China where, like the Dalai Lama, it is illegal to possess her picture.

This interview -- at an August 2008 protest march in Washington DC, where Tibetans, Uyghurs and other groups protested the Olympics in Beijing -- was the first and last time I had the privilege to meet her.

Note: the sub-titles here are rough translations taken from the interview translator, Alim Seytoff.

Most chinese are ignorant of truth and hard hearted, so they would not consider the fact that you would point out to them. And they are not here to learn or find out anything, they are here to enforce their ideas on you just as how those ideas were enforced on them through the years of so called “patriotic education”.

So please stop wasting your time and energy to fight over political matters with them.

    Guys! Come on! Stop arguing!

First of all most Chinese guys are not here to understand Uyghurs or to help us! They don’t care what ever happens to us, and it doesn’t matter to them that whatever is happening in the realty, they could only look at this world through the lens of nationalism, and we don’t mean anything to them. So it is not really worth your time to explain to them that we need freedom or equality or rights!

  • I have heard that the Dalai Lama has two Muslim advisors that are connected to terrorists groups. So the Islamic imperialists are using the naive Tibetians to futher their phony human rights campaign against China and other non-believers.Well...I used to support the Dalai Lama but now he is a usefull idiot of Islamic terrorism! China, keep Tibet and stop terrorism in Xinjiang provence!

  • hi guys. i heard uyghur language and was surprised that its same with uzbek language. and i want to talk to any uyghur person to compare if we can understand each other. im uzbek. if anybody interrested you can find memon facebook( Mirsaid Usmonov). im really interested in this

  • Don't buy this Islamic Takkiyah tactician story. Islamists wanted to destroy non-islamic societies especially Europe and America. Europe have too much Islamic terrorist problems already. Uighur muslims are also being caught fighting on Al-Qaida's side in Afganisthan.
