1st mov: Allegro con brio

Wilhelm Furtwangler leads the BPO in Beethoven's fifth symphony on May 4, 1954 at the Paris Opera. While not as well known as the wartime performance or the last recorded performance (5.23.54), I believe that this version is the best realisation of Furtwangler's overall conception of the score, despite the BPO being in less than perfect form.

  • It is the job of the conductor to make sure the orchestra ARE in good form.If they do not know how to perform... get some people who can.I'm sure Beethoven would not make do with people who could not make a great contribution to this fantastic work.

In all likelihoods the early performances of this were under even scrappier orchestras. In the early 19th century this piece was considered difficult, today most orchestras can play it in their sleep.

  • Это нахальство - выкладывать музыку без видео... Послущать я и так могу, причём, в гораздо лучшем качестве..

  • If you have a video of Furtwangler conducting this symphony that you want to offer up then do so and amaze me, but to my knowledge none exist.

  • Nothing but perfect, makes me weep.

  • @cromulus No. This are exactely Beethovens tempi! Carlos Kleiber's interpretation of the 5th symphony is not as good as the 4th symphony. There Kleiber and Furtwängler are best.

The "desteny" motive is no where worked out better than in Furtwängler's interpretations as different as they might be.

  • In my opinion this recording is the must perfect performance of this perfect masterwork.

  • Furtwangler always perfection

I agree...and they should have all been made to eat cheese triangles until they learnt the fundamentals of the music they were challenged to perform.

  • Too damned slow! Karajan's and Kleiber's interpretations are so much better.

  • el maestro.
