http://www.tylergrund.com/supermods.htm

Here is yet another customer's super reverb modified throughout by me (Tyler Grund).

I did NOT record the audio by direct mic this time so there is a lot of bounce going on in the room. Sorry about the low voice. I had no idea I wasn't being picked up very well. Most of what I'm saying isn't important anyway.

Like my other videos, important things to note:
EV Speakers
7581a power tubes
Normal channel and Trem disconnected.
Additional Personal Modifications

Any questions, feel free to ask!

  • Dear Tyler, I love your (distorted) sound. I had a silverface bassman 100 from '74 which sounded awful. I took out almost all the electronics (except the transformers)and decided to base it on the bassman '59, but with KT66's. It sounds very nice clean but I can't get that sweet distortion you have. The PPIV is a good idea. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe the preamp as the SR? Maybe exchange the PI tube from 12ax7 to 12at7? Makes the EVM10 speaker a great difference? I use Eminence. Thanks!

  • @GreenPylix

Two tips would be to use a mullard 12at7 in the phase inverter and to pay attention to wiring paths. Ocillations due to "cross-talk' between wires is a big cause for harsh distortions.

  • The record has offically been set straight!! :)

Thanks Tyler. I like a bit of recto sag (wow, that sounds pretty bad) but my '69 SR just came back from my tech and the sweet spot is nice but cranked, it's far too mushy.

Can a solid state plug simply be put in or does it need to be rebiased, or other?

The SR is a great amp but I know mine is not quite where I want it to be.

  • @MrPeterpuck007

it will need to be re-biased. Another reason players tend to lean towards tube rectifiers is that they lower the amps overall B+ voltage. This drop darkens the amps sound, but also decreases its headroom. Lower B+ means different bias range.

  • Tyler, please set the record straight on SS rectifier mods. Some say dangerous. How would you describe the impact on the SR.

    Thanks!!!!

  • @MrPeterpuck007

I'm confused. Who says its dangerous? A SS rectifier is actually SAFER then a tube since tubes fail, very often. Not to mention if can't put as much mains filtering as you want with tubes. The impact is more noticeable when cranked. The notes stay together better and don't fall apart into mush.
