Using VTK, the HTML5 Canvas and WebGL on Firefox, I have developed a proof of concept for web-based medical imaging applications. Thanks to the local rendering provide by the GPU, the interaction with the scene and the overall user experience is much better than the one offered by the alternatives (Java Applet, Flash Plugin, VRML viewer, etc).

  • Very very cool !

  • This is very interesting. I can immediately see an academic application for demonstrating biologic or pharmacologic processes - ie demo antibiotic mechanisms of action, drug-receptor coupling, sickle cell deformation/bunching, gene transcription processes, and more.

  • Very nice - is that a voxel-based renderer, or are those polygon meshes?
