High stakes testing has forced teachers to teach to the test, schools to close, and children to miss out on the joy and excitement of a real, well-rounded education.

  • I don't get it. I'm not saying the tests currently used are perfect (I'm sure they need improvement), but lots of schools are failing to teach the basics. So, how do you identify the problem areas and measure progress without a test of some kind? Also, the only schools that "teach to the test" are the ones likely to fail. A high functioning school can transcend tests because its a given that it will meet the minimum standards.

  • I agree to some extent - we need a method to identify progress. The problem is that high functioning schools are NOT able to transcend the tests. It's a given that they will meet minimum standards, but minimum standards aren't good to get into middle school. My daughter attended one of the highest performing elementary schools in District 2 and had endless test prep (especially in 4th grade) that put other learning on the back burner. She needed to get high 3s or 4s to get into a good school.

  • When I taught 2nd grade in NYC the wife of the local district big shot MADE us teach this INSANE math program and I refused to do it. When it was time to test the kids I had 5th graders come in and sit with my kids and help them answer the questions. It was the only thing I could do to teach what I knew was right for my class.

  • Yes!

  • BloomKlein have destroyed NYC public schools.
