Cushings is one of many serious illnesses caused by breeding hamsters when you have not done your research on your hamster's genetics and family history. Hamsters from rescues and pet shops should never be bred as it's almost impossible to trace their family history.

Look at Snickers' case and other cases like hers and ask yourself, is it really worth breeding hamsters with unknown genetics when the offspring will suffer?

  • I've had two of my own litters, call me irresponsible call me whatever, but it was the best experience I've ever had with animals. As long as I can keep on tracking down full goldens I'll never breed again (Only golden). I feel bad for what happened with your hamster and I understand breeding is demonized and has all reason to be, but I'm sure you can agree with me, it has it's un-earthly rewards, second best to having your own child...

  • @Lazyeyeartist Thank you for your comment :) I'm not totally in disagreeance with breeding, I just don't agree when people go about it the wrong way. Animals should be pedigree e.g bought from an NHC breeder and 2 patterns/satins should not be bred together. Also, people really need to consider WHY they are breeding. It should either be to improve health/temperament or to breed for show stock. Not because people like cute babies...

  • i was thinking of breeding - err :/im quite scared to do it now, they are both defonatly syrians, the right age now they seem very healthy but i got them from a pet shop :/

  • @TheSGgirls I wouldn't recommend it, you have no idea of what genetics they carry and whether they have a family history of illness. The whole point of breeding is to improve health, temperament or show lines and by breeding hamsters from pet shops, you are not achieving this. So please think it though. :)

  • @2k10casey thanks for the advice, im reconsidering it now, i dont think im going to breed my hamsters.

  • @TheSGgirls I think it's in your hamsters' and the possible babies' best interests. You've made a good choice. :)
